Joe Sutphin
Central Ohio
Joe Sutphin is an illustrator for children’s literature, working primarily in quill pen and ink. His ink work can be found in the NY Times Bestselling novel Word Of Mouse by James Patterson and Chris Grabenstein, Dr. Critchlore’s School for Minions by Sheila Grau, Raffie On The Run by Jacqueline Resnick, as well as other books. Publisher’s Weekly described Joe’s ink work in Word Of Mouse as, “Reminiscent of Garth Williams’s work in Stuart Little”. Joe has a great love for the finality of ink as well as the many implied textures and tones that can be achieved by laying down lines on a blank page. His preferred nib of choice is the Speedball Hunt 102, for its razor-sharp point, its wonderfully varied line weights depending on pressure and technique, as well as its ease of availability and economical cost. He typically works in Acrylic ink and will often cut it 50/50 with Speedball Super Black to keep it fluid and prevent the acrylic from gumming up.
